Community Involvement
From raising money to support charitable organizations to credit union staff volunteering their time in the community, Mississippi credit unions are not just in the community, they are part of it! In addition to your involvement on the local level, there are several national initiatives that offer credit unions the opportunity to connect with their community:
Biz Kid$
Produced in high definition by the Emmy Award-winning creators of Bill Nye the Science Guy, Biz Kid$ is a fun, fast-paced series designed to entertain, engage, and elevate kids’ knowledge about money. Biz Kid$ started broadcasting in January of 2008 and is shown on eight Mississippi PBS stations and many more nationwide. Every Biz Kid$ episode begins and ends with a narrator reminding viewers that: “Production funding for Biz Kid$ is provided by America’s Credit Unions, where people are worth more than money.”
Credit Unions Can Teach Biz Kid$
Each episode of Biz Kid$ comes with teaching materials developed by Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide to be used in classrooms and homes. Companion materials and other resources are available at no cost at
www.bizkids.com. The site also features clips from the series and invites kids to appear on the show.
The National Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning Program (NEFE HSFPP) website,
http://hsfpp.nefe.org/home, provides access to their award-winning, fully-developed financial literacy curriculum that credit unions can use to be a guest speaker in classrooms and/or provide to teachers in the their local schools.
America's Credit Unions, along with the Cooperative Extension System partner with NEFE to teach and distribute the HSFPP curriculum.
